Thomas was quite gracious in assisting me with some technical issues that I missed in the previous version.  I did not realize how much clipping was left in after the conversion to MP3.

I have the honor of honors to bring you an interview with the self-described curmudgeon, hacker and hacktivist - Thomas "cmdln" Gideon of the Command Line Podcast, where he is producer and host.  He is an incredibly gifted podcaster, mentor and friend.  I asked Thomas to speak about the philosophy, practice and art involved in hacktivism, and its two component pieces: hacking and activism.  This is a wonderful discussion defining and describing all three terms, adding a layer of practical application to everyday life.

This is Part One focusing on the first half of the word hacktivism: hacking.  A lawyer, or soon to be lawyer, can take many fine lessons from Thomas' descriptions of how a hacker will task themself to learn everything they can from a certain system, any system.  I would say that an attorney would be greatly challenged, but equally rewarded, for looking at our legal system and industry through the eyes of a hacker at law.

The Life After Law School Podcast

No new audio for the moment, as I'm working through technical issues before releasing Part II of my interview with Thomas "cmdln" Gideon.

I am dropping into the feed the recent report from the U.S. Goverment Accountability Office (GAO) released on October 26, 2009, discussing the cost and access to law schools.  This is just the report itself and I will likely look at it more closely in a future episode.  The report is GA0-09-941 and you can find more information on the GAO and this report at their website http://www.gao.gov/ .

I'm going to work on the technical issues in the meantime.

The Life After Law School Podcast

Sorry, but no original content from me today.  Instead I'm bringing you something another podcast that my listeners will recognize.  My friend, Thomas Gideon, produces The Command Line Podcast which discusses the intersection of society and technology.  At Balticon 43 over this past Memorial Day weekend, he set up, moderated, and recorded a panel of content creators to discuss how technology is changing the way content is delivered and consumed.  This was an incredibly interesting panel to attend and I want you to absorb the discussion and then apply those same questions about content delivery to the legal industry.

I've made no edits as the file is almost an hour long as it is.

The Command Line - TCLP 2009-05-27 Balticon 43: Peer Media v. Broadcast Media

In the intro a heart felt thank you to my good friend, Chris Miller, for his support and advice without which my recent experience at Balticon would not have been anywhere near as phenomenal.

The Life After Law School Podcast

This is a special edition of an Inaugural flavor.  I tested out my new Zoom H2 recorder by taking it with me to the National Mall to bear witness to the inauguration of our 44th President of the United States, Barak Obama.  The following recording is of his taking the Oath of Office and his Inaugural Address.

This is what you would have heard standing at the base of the Washington Monument.  There is crowd noise, wind noise and a bit of reverb from the time difference of many multiples of sound systems throughout the National Mall.

The Life After Law School Podcast

This episode discusses how human expectations have driven the costs of certain, high-value assets like housing and education to unsustainable levels.  The title and concept come from the book The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Parents are Going Broke by Elizabeth Warren and Amelia Warren Tyagi.  I simply see a similar trains of circumstances relating to new lawyers and their law school debt as the authors lay out between two income families and bankruptcy.

While I am working on mixing down the next episode, there are a couple of news articles and blog posts that I've become aware of and wanted to share.  It's too late for me to include them in the podcast, but I didn't want to wait to share them.

Joe Miller of www.joemillerjd.com has an interesting post on what you should consider before diving into grad school to weather the recession.  Items to consider include grade inflation, school rankings and your motivations for entering law school.

Carolyn Elefant of www.myshingle.com continues her fight against the professional and social disregard shown to solo practitioners by BigLaw in her new post where she compares large firms and solo attorneys to the famous addage about Fred Astare and Ginger Rodgers.

For all the Twitterers in the crowd, Scott Greenfield of The Simple Justice Blog has an interesting post on the norms and mores of retweeting Tweets.  It's an interesting discussion of what really matters in social media.

The National Law Journal posted a new article by Julie Kay about the life, times and dearth of work for contract attorneys.  These are not the type of contract attorneys that we spoke to Kimberly Alderman about, but are the masses of temporary attorneys that BigLaw uses to man their large projects for low-level legal work.

The feature this week is part two of a round table discussion of some of the issues that were prominent this year.  I was joined by Kevin Crosby, Vaskin Kissoyan, and Eric Christensen.  The topic of this part is where we are at with copyright infringement and enforcement.  Most recently the RIAA has announced it is stopping its individual law suits.  However, they are pressing an unusual criminal case against an individual.  The risk of the urge to perfect enforcement is the increasing irrelevance of copyright to the average person.
