Life After Law School Podcast
An audio podcast discussing how to survive as a young attorney while bridging the gap between Legal Education, the Legal Profession and the Business of Law.

The Life After Law School Podcast

Thomas was quite gracious in assisting me with some technical issues that I missed in the previous version.  I did not realize how much clipping was left in after the conversion to MP3.

The Notes:

I have the honor of honors to bring you an interview with the self-described curmudgeon, hacker and hacktivist - Thomas "cmdln" Gideon of the Command Line Podcast, where he is producer and host.  He is an incredibly gifted podcaster, mentor and friend.  I asked Thomas to speak about the philosophy, practice and art involved in hacktivism, and its two component pieces: hacking and activism.  This is a wonderful discussion defining and describing all three terms, adding a layer of practical application to everyday life.

This is Part One focusing on the first half of the word hacktivism: hacking.  A lawyer, or soon to be lawyer, can take many fine lessons from Thomas' descriptions of how a hacker will task themself to learn everything they can from a certain system, any system.  I would say that an attorney would be greatly challenged, but equally rewarded, for looking at our legal system and industry through the eyes of a hacker at law.

The Life After Law School Podcast

This episode features hints and tips for 1L's that Kevin learned from mistakes he made, and other things he saw, while going through law school.  There is no handy-dandy list here because a) there is a lazy show notes mood going around, and b) you are supposed to use your ears with a podcast.

I do have to apologize for the sound quality on this one, I tried out a new recording set up but I was not able to filter everything out.  You will hear some bugs, my neighbors and a train.  Amazing what some people will do to get on this show...

Just doing a fast run through of the news, mentioning the big news of the day use yourself the Google for more details.

Promos:

FETIDUS - http://www.fetidus.org/

And a big thank you to Chooch and Viv of the Into the Blender and City of Heroes podcasts.

And finally, a very long rant against the idea - or possibly just the execution of this idea - of the ABA's new Legal Rebels project.

Kevin has some comments about what is NOT being said about the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the United States Supreme Court.  Will partisan politics shape the future Court into a body of individuals who are heavily academic and sheltered from the effects on daily life when they rule on issues of the day?

The Life After Law School Podcast

Sorry, but no original content from me today.  Instead I'm bringing you something another podcast that my listeners will recognize.  My friend, Thomas Gideon, produces The Command Line Podcast which discusses the intersection of society and technology.  At Balticon 43 over this past Memorial Day weekend, he set up, moderated, and recorded a panel of content creators to discuss how technology is changing the way content is delivered and consumed.  This was an incredibly interesting panel to attend and I want you to absorb the discussion and then apply those same questions about content delivery to the legal industry.

I've made no edits as the file is almost an hour long as it is.

Enjoy!

The Command Line - TCLP 2009-05-27 Balticon 43: Peer Media v. Broadcast Media

This is a feature cast.

In the intro a heart felt thank you to my good friend, Chris Miller, for his support and advice without which my recent experience at Balticon would not have been anywhere near as phenomenal.

There is no listener feedback this week.  There is also no hacker word of the week due to the length of the feature.

The feature this week is the recording of the Peer Media vs. Broadcast Media panel at Balticon 43.  I was joined by Earl Newton, Dave Slusher and Patrick McLean all of whom I owe a debt of gratitude for this great discussion.  For clarification, the book Patrick mentions is “Against Intellectual Monopoly” by Michele Boldrin and David Levine.  Patrick also sent me a link to an interview with Boldrin which led me to the web site, Against Monopoly, which furthers the discussion with contributions from several other scholars.

April 1st is a sad day as it marks the passing of Joe Murphy.  While I am a much more recent addition to podcasting, I still feel the loss.  No one else could put into words than the people who knew him best and I give hearty thanks to Tee Morris who updated this tribute to Joe.

My name is Kevin and I remember Joe.

From Tee -

No matter how crazy the time or the schedules in life get, we make time to remember; and on April 1st, Jack and I are asking that you remember our fallen friend, Joe Murphy.

For those of you new to podcasting, you might have missed the audio wit and always-clever banter of my friend, Joe Murphy. He was (and still is) an amazing guy, his voice now part of the history of such podcasts, as Wingin' It, Slice of SciFi, The Kick Ass Mystic Ninjas, and the award-winning The Case of the Singing Sword: A Billibub Baddings Mystery. He was taken from us too soon, and on April 1 we remember him.

Please, syndicate this podcast through your feeds, blog about Joe, tell a friend today about Joe Murphy, show your support in an avatar change, and let your subscribers know that you also remember Joe.

For more information, please check out "Give Us A Minute" at http://www.joemurphymemorialfund.org/ .

Thank you.

The Life After Law School Podcast

This is a special edition of an Inaugural flavor.  I tested out my new Zoom H2 recorder by taking it with me to the National Mall to bear witness to the inauguration of our 44th President of the United States, Barak Obama.  The following recording is of his taking the Oath of Office and his Inaugural Address.

This is what you would have heard standing at the base of the Washington Monument.  There is crowd noise, wind noise and a bit of reverb from the time difference of many multiples of sound systems throughout the National Mall.

You can find the full text of his address at CNN at http://tinyurl.com/7buosk

Also, remember that Copynight is coming up, check out www.copynight.org

The Life After Law School Podcast

This episode discusses how human expectations have driven the costs of certain, high-value assets like housing and education to unsustainable levels.  The title and concept come from the book The Two-Income Trap: Why Middle-Class Parents are Going Broke by Elizabeth Warren and Amelia Warren Tyagi.  I simply see a similar trains of circumstances relating to new lawyers and their law school debt as the authors lay out between two income families and bankruptcy.

To finish off the hat trick, I'm dropping in the last of the three-part End-of-the-Year Roundtable hosted by my friend Cmdln on his podcast, The Command Line Podcast, which he was gracious enough to invite me to join.

As no else can say it better, I'm including his show notes below.  New, original episodes of the Life After Law School Podcast are just around the corner.

The Command Line Podcast

This is a feature cast.

The feature this week is part three of a round table discussion of some of the issues that were prominent this year.  I was joined by Kevin Crosby, Vaskin Kissoyan, and Eric Christensen.  The topic of this part is the future of computing and we got into a fun, far ranging discussion of cloud computing and some of the technical and non-technical issues it raises.

More news and commentary, the alternate feed, and downloadable show notes available at http://thecommandline.net/.

The Life After Law School Podcast

Happy New Year!!  This is the second of a three part end-of-the-year roundtable that I was graciously asked to participate in by my friend and host of The Command Line Podcast, CmdLn.  I'm including his show notes below, as he can say is better than I.

The Command Line Podcast

This is a feature cast.

In the intro, I share my review of Ed Piskor's "Wizzywig Volume 1: Phreak".

The feature this week is part two of a round table discussion of some of the issues that were prominent this year.  I was joined by Kevin Crosby, Vaskin Kissoyan, and Eric Christensen.  The topic of this part is where we are at with copyright infringement and enforcement.  Most recently the RIAA has announced it is stopping its individual law suits.  However, they are pressing an unusual criminal case against an individual.  The risk of the urge to perfect enforcement is the increasing irrelevance of copyright to the average person.

I recently had the great honor to be asked to join the end of the year roundtable on The Command Line Podcast, which in my opinion is the best technology podcast around.  The roundtable is broken into three pieces and this is the first of them.  I am also adding Cmdln's notes in full below.  I hope you enjoy it!

The Command Line Podcast

This is a feature cast.

The feature this week is part one of a round table discussion of some of the issues that were prominent this year.  I was joined by Kevin Crosby, Vaskin Kissoyan, and Eric Christensen.  The topic of this part is the state of copyright, taking into consideration this year's petitions for exemptions to the DMCA and the defeated Canadian DMCA.  We quickly veered into a discussion of generation gaps and norms, however.

More news and commentary, the alternate feed, and downloadable show notes available at http://thecommandline.net/.

I'm sorry, but I'm running late with the current episode.  Summarizing all the information turned out to be a little bit more than I anticipated.

I'll get this up as soon as possible.

The episode discusses some of the stress points in the Cravath Method as it is applied by the spectrum of firms today.  The main issues for discussion are the Cravath Method's lack of scalability and the paradigm shift that has occurred in legal education since it was created in 1900.

Inspired by Professor William Henderson's post "How the Cravath System Created the Bi-Modal Distribution" on the Empirical Legal Studies Blog.
